Spisa smaker (Sweden):
Spisa Smaker in Sweden, reducing their use of plastic
Spisa Smaker AB is one of the largest companies in Europe growing fresh organic herbs in pots. Since 2019, the company has gradually phased out and replaced the plastic pots with FiberCell paper. This is in line with the company’s environmental responsibility to reduce its carbon footprint and goes hand in hand with their vision of continuous improvements.
– “We are constantly working to find new smart innovative solutions to meet the demands in the market. But it is also important from an economic, social and environmental perspective”, says Mattias Thene, Marketing Manager at Spisa Smaker AB.
Together with Spisa, we have developed a special FiberCell variety within our family of Bio Based papers. This paper is optimized for herbs and lettuce, and it degrades in correlation with the plant’s own root development. The technology is currently used at 3 of Spisa’s 4 Swedish facilities and provides a total plastic saving of over 170 tons per year.
In addition to the use of less plastic, the new fiber cell is also grown in a newly developed type of holder, which means that Spisa can grow 40% more plants in the same area. It also offers great economic and environmental benefits.
– “We are pleased, and our journey continues towards a 100% plastic-free pot cultivation”, Mattias continues.
At BCC and Fibercell we are happy to be a part of this journey!
